Separate videos on each of the thirty two video screens that form this towering structure display a small video vignette from individual waterfalls along the geologic formation known as the Niagara Escarpment. Videos from Eugenia, Webster, Decew, Niagara Falls, and many others, coalesce into a video and sound installation in the central corridor of Brookfield Place in downtown Toronto. The individual television sets operate like pieces of a video jigsaw puzzle, collectively re-animating a small campfire. Electronic smoke and embers slowly rise towards the sky, transcending the awkward physicality of obsolete technology, becoming ethereal, like fire itself. Kevin Cooley and Phillip Andrew Lewis immortalize The Impatient I, an ordinary, derelict sailboat, similar in size to Le Griffon. Like many project boats, due to age, weather, and neglect, this 26' Luger Tradewinds was left to deteriorate on a farm outside of Grand Rapids. Entering into the realm of the sublime, the artists envision an alternate fate for this sailboat through a series of surreal actions in this two channel video and sculptural installation. One channel depicts the ship's recovery from a sunken state ascending slowly from beneath the surface of the water and disappearing into the sky. At the same time the second video presents the ship in free fall out of the sky and onto dry land where it fractures on impact. As the tension between the channels continues in an infinite loop, the ship becomes caught in a perpetual state of oscillation between rejuvenation and ruin. However, the lens of each camera frames the sky, allowing the artists to tune into a specific view. It removes the clamor of New York City from the equation and creates a situation in which one can concentrate on a single thing, a rare moment in New York. However, this rare, focused moment comes per the mediation of a screen. Using the quintessential Los Angeles experience of driving as allegory, the video takes the point of view of a passenger gazing upward through an open-top convertible, or sunroof while riding throughout the city. This point of view manifests physically in the gallery by presenting this nearly ten-minute sequence on an oversized, suspended screen, compelling viewers to stare upwards toward the skylight-like tableau. The scale of the landscape is so immense and the icebergs so small that it is impossible to immediately realize that one of them moves unnaturally through the water towards the camera. When the right channel commences, a close up perspective of the moving iceberg as shot from the stern of a large vessel appears. This view reveals in great detail the largeness of the iceberg, its struggle against the wake of the ship, and the fragility of the pink rope lassoed around it. The two synchronized 24 minute channels present familiar views of the skies, yet the sun and the moon remain as constant points near the center of the frame.
